When someone searches "website designer near me" or "saree shop in Tirupur", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Getting into that map pack brings calls, direction requests and walk-ins without paying for ads. It starts with a free Google Business Profile and a few habits that most competitors skip.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

  1. Search for your business name on Google Maps. If it already exists, choose "Claim this business". If not, add it from Google Business Profile.
  2. Use your exact business name as it appears on your signboard. Do not add keywords or city names to it; that can get the profile suspended.
  3. Choose the most specific primary category, such as "Website designer" rather than "Business", and add a few secondary categories that fit.
  4. Enter your address, or set a service area if customers do not visit you.

Step 2: Verify it

Google asks you to prove the business is real. Depending on your business, this may be a short video of your premises and signage, a phone or email code, or a postcard. Follow the steps exactly; a verified profile is required before it appears reliably in search.

Step 3: Complete every section

  • Phone number and website. Use the same phone number everywhere online.
  • Opening hours, including special hours for festivals and holidays.
  • Services or products with short descriptions.
  • Photos: outside (so people can find you), inside, your team and your work. Add new photos every month.
  • Description: two or three plain sentences on what you do and where.

Step 4: Keep your details consistent

Google compares your name, address and phone number across your website, social media and directories. Make them identical everywhere, including the PIN code. If you moved or changed your number, update every listing, not only Google.

Step 5: Get reviews and reply to them

  • Ask happy customers for a review soon after the work is done. A short link or QR code makes it easy.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and in a sentence or two.
  • Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. Google removes them and can penalise the profile.

Step 6: Support it with your website

  • Put your full address, phone number and a map on your contact page.
  • Create a page for each main service, mentioning the areas you serve.
  • Add your business details as structured data (schema) so Google reads them correctly.
  • Make sure the website is fast and works well on phones.

Step 7: Post updates

Use Google Business Profile posts for offers, new products and events, especially before festivals. Posts show on your profile and signal that the business is active.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?

A verified profile usually appears within days, but ranking in the top three for competitive searches takes steady work on reviews, photos and your website over several months.

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing the profile is free. Be careful of calls from people offering to "verify" it for a fee.

Can I add my home address?

If customers do not visit you, set a service area and hide the address. If they do visit, show the address customers actually come to.
